Our Curriculum

Welcome to Year 2 at Rauceby Church of England School! This year is an exciting journey of discovery, creativity and growing independence. We want every child to feel valued, confident and excited about learning, while developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to become successful lifelong learners.

Our curriculum is ambitious, inspiring and rooted in our school values of kindness, equality, forgiveness and aspiration. We encourage children to be curious, ask thoughtful questions, share their ideas and have the courage to tackle challenges. Learning is brought to life through stories, practical investigations, creative projects and opportunities to explore our local community and the wider world.

In English, we will share a fantastic collection of books, including Fantastic Mr Fox, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Paddington, The Sheep-Pig, The Enchanted Wood and The Boy Who Grew Dragons. These stories will inspire children to write character descriptions, narratives, diaries, poems, explanations, information texts and persuasive pieces.

In Maths, children will develop their fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills as they explore numbers to 100, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, money, shape, time, position and direction, measure and more.

Our Science learning will be full of opportunities to investigate and discover. Children will explore what our bodies need to stay healthy, test different materials, investigate how animals grow, explore habitats and food chains, and discover the secret life of plants through practical experiments and long-term observations.

Our wider curriculum takes us from Rauceby Then and Now, to the Great Fire of London, the life of Sir Joseph Banks, and the geography is where children become explorers and will use maps, compass directions and simple geographical vocabulary to locate places and features.

Children will also develop their creativity through Art, Design and Technology, Music and Computing, while PE and Forest School encourage teamwork, resilience and healthy lifestyles.

Through RE and PSHE, children will explore different religions, spirituality and worldviews, develop empathy and compassion, understand relationships and personal safety, and consider how they can contribute positively to their community and the wider world.

Above all, Year 2 is about wonder, discovery and having the confidence to ask, “I wonder why?”
