    Our Curriculum

Our Reception class is a very important stage in your child’s education. We believe the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the foundations for future learning and plays a significant role in helping children develop as confident, curious and independent learners.

Children learn through a carefully balanced combination of play, adult-led teaching and child-initiated activities. They have opportunities to learn both indoors and outdoors, supported by highly skilled adults who use conversation, questioning and interaction to extend children’s thinking and learning. We place great importance on developing children’s language and communication through a rich and stimulating environment.

    Early Reading and Phonics
We follow Read Write Inc. to develop children’s early reading, writing and communication skills. Through daily phonics sessions, children learn to recognise and say sounds, blend sounds together to read words, and segment sounds to support spelling and writing. The programme is structured and engaging, helping children to become confident, accurate and enthusiastic readers.

    Early Maths
For mathematics, we use NCETM Mastering Number, alongside Numberblocks, to help children develop a secure and deeper understanding of numbers and mathematical concepts. Children develop these skills through adult-led teaching as well as purposeful, play-based experiences indoors and outdoors.

    Drawing Club
Drawing Club is a particular favourite in Reception. Children use their imagination to create characters, objects and settings inspired by stories. They talk about their drawings and explain what they mean, developing their vocabulary and communication skills. Children then use their own ‘codes’ — including numbers, letters and words — to add meaning and magic to their creations. This encourages children to become confident, independent writers who are willing to ‘have a go’ and record their own ideas.

    Understanding the World
We help children develop an understanding of the world through carefully selected books, stories and meaningful experiences. These encourage curiosity, imagination and purposeful conversations about the world around us. Children explore different cultures, traditions, families and communities, developing respect, empathy and an appreciation of the similarities and differences between people.
