Year 5 is an exciting year of growing independence, curiosity and confidence. Throughout the year, children will be encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, explore different perspectives and make connections between their learning and the world around them. Our curriculum gives them opportunities to investigate, create, discuss, challenge ideas and develop the confidence to take their learning further.
In English, children will enjoy a rich range of stories, poetry and non-fiction, including Wonder, Viking Boy, High Rise Mystery, Greek myths and The Highwayman. These texts will inspire children to write for a variety of purposes, including narratives, poetry, explanation texts, reports, discussion and persuasion. Alongside this, they will develop their vocabulary, grammar and understanding of how authors use language to create meaning.
In Maths, children will develop their understanding of decimals, fractions, multiplication and division, negative numbers, measurement, area, volume, factors, multiples and angles. There will be a strong emphasis on reasoning and problem-solving, helping children to explain their mathematical thinking and apply their knowledge in different contexts.
Science will encourage children to think and work like scientists. They will investigate life cycles and reproduction, explore the movement of the Earth and patterns of day and night, study materials and their changing properties, and investigate forces such as air and water resistance and friction. Practical investigations and observations of our local environment will help children develop their scientific thinking and ability to draw conclusions from evidence.
Our History and Geography learning will take children from the Industrial Revolution and Victorian Britain to Ancient Greece and the struggle for the English throne in 1066. In Geography, children will explore biomes, climate and the location of countries, investigate changing coastlines and coastal environments, and discover Scandinavia and the world of the Vikings.
Children will develop their creativity through Art, Design Technology and Music, experimenting with printmaking, sculpture, typography, textiles and moving mechanisms, as well as developing musical skills through composition, performance and learning to play the ukulele. PE, Forest School and Computing will provide further opportunities to develop teamwork, resilience, creativity and independence.
Through RE, Spirituality and Worldviews and PSHE, children will explore beliefs, philosophical questions, relationships, identity, equality and respect, while developing empathy and an understanding of the experiences of others.
Above all, Year 5 is a year of thinking deeply, trying new things and discovering what we are capable of. We want children to develop the knowledge, confidence and independence to embrace challenges and continue to grow as learners.
