Personal Social Health and Economic Education

The aim of our PSHE curriculum here at Rauceby Primary School is to equip children with the essential skills for life; it intends to develop the whole child through a broad range of experiences that develop the knowledge, skills and attributes children need to protect and enhance their wellbeing.

Through PSHE, children will learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships and become active citizens, responsibly participating in society around them.  PSHE is a vital tool in preparing children for life in society now and in the future.

PSHE at Rauceby aims to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, teamworking and critical thinking in the context of three core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world including economic wellbeing.

How is PSHE taught at Rauceby?

PSHE is taught through our scheme of work called Jigsaw. PSHE education is a school subject through which our children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life and work. We know this has an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for our children, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

The mental health and well-being of our children is a high priority for us and we promote the 5 steps to well being with our children. Mrs Waites is our Senior Mental Health Lead and Mrs Craddock is a trained ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) who can offer additional support if children are experiencing emotional difficulties.

Relationship and Sex Education is also taught throughout each year group in our school at an age appropriate level so that our children leave us well informed about their own bodies and how they will change, their relationships with friends and family, and how to keep themselves physically and emotionally safe. Our RSE policy which was worked through with our parent working group, can be found in the policy section.

What should my child be achieving in PSHE?

In reception, your child will be working towards the following Early Learning Goals:

Making Relationships:  Children play co-operatively, taking turns with others. They take account of one another’s ideas about how to organise their activity. They show sensitivity to others’ needs and feelings, and form positive relationships with adults and other children.

Self-Confidence and Self-Awareness: Children are confident to try new activities, and say why they like some activities more than others. They are confident to speak in a familiar group, will talk about their ideas, and will choose the resources they need for their chosen activities. They say when they do or don’t need help.

Managing Feelings and Behaviour: Children talk about how they and others show feelings, talk about their own and others’ behaviour, and its consequences, and know that some behaviour is unacceptable. They work as part of a group or class, and understand and follow the rules. They adjust their behaviour to different situations, and take changes of routine in their stride.

In Years 1 - 6, children will be working towards the following expectations set out below:
